Isaac Eyre opened his first shop in Holywell Street, Chesterfield,
in 1875.

Transport was originally by horse-drawn waggons.

"At the back of their principal shop is an extensive warehouse in which some 250 sets of bedsteads were last week stored, and under the same roof is the paint shop, Messrs. Eyre making all the furniture themselves with the exception of chairs..".(From The Derbyshire Times, 1886)

Great days recalled
from Eyres catalogue of 1890...

Steam-powered waggons were introduced by the end of the century.

From The Derbyshire Times, Saturday 15th May 1886:

Although started on a comparatively small scale in 1872, the business of Messrs. Isaac Eyre and Sons has rapidly grown, and it now assumes what may truly be termed large proportions, and seldom a day passes without one or two large vans leaving the establishment in Holywell Street, with heavy loads of newly purchased furniture.

....There is a splendid stock of all descriptions of furniture, including some handsome wardrobes in American birch and ash, and large sideboards with bevelled edge glass backs of the Queen Anne style. The shop, in fact, is surrounded with massive sideboards and cheffioniers, whilst the centre part of the floor is completely covered with bedsteads and a variety of household furniture. At the back of the shop is a room in which is stored immense rolls of matting and oil cloths of all colours and makes, and above the shop is a large storeroom packed full of bed ticks, looking glasses in properly arranged cupboards, and rolls of cretonnes, tapestries and mattress ticks...

The third storey is devoted to the storage of feathers and flocks, there being over two tons of flocks, and over half a ton of feathers. Here the beds and mattress ticks are filled, stitched and finished off, and then lowered by a crane for the showroom.
